Fair trade regulatory authority CCI has approved the proposed merger of seed firm Advanta Ltd with agrochemical major UPL. UPL has announced the merger of Advanta as part of the strategy to provide agri solutions through a single entity. Advanta, a group company of UPL is within the development. production and sale of field crop as well as vegetable seeds. CCI has cleared the proposed transaction and considered market for seeds in the nation as a relevant market.

▼ India’s sugar production has risen by 7% to 110.90 lakh tonnes   [01-20-16]

India’s sugar production has risen by 7% to 110.90 lakh tonnes till January 2015 at the end of the marketing year ending September as mills start commencing with operations earlier. Sugar production in India is the world’s largest producer and consumer pegged at 103.82 lakh tonnes during the period of 2014-2015 marketing year. Sugar mills have commenced crane crushing operations earlier this year.

▼ Sikkim has become the first fully organic state in India   [01-15-16]

The state has become India’s first fully organic state by converting around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land into sustainable cultivation. In Sikkim around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land was gradually converted to certified organic land by implementing organic practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production. It was 12 years ago in 2003 when the Pawan Chamling-led government decided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly.

▼ ICAR and IARI have developed Pusa Mustard-30   [01-13-16]

Indian public research institutions - Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Indian Agricultural Research Institute have developed a low erucic acid mustard variety namely Pusa Mustard-30, PM-30 will not only benefit health but increase productivity. As compared to the normal mustard varieties which possess more than 40% of the harmful erucic acid , PM-30 possesses close to 2% of the erucic acid using conventional breeding method. This is the first of its kind effort under ICAR-IARI as per the PPP mode for launching indigenously developed health value product with improved oil quality.
