▼ Veteran wildlife film maker Naresh Bedi wins V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award   [01-29-16]

At the inaugural ceremony of the MIFF 2016, veteran wildlife film maker Naresh Bedi has won the V Shantaram Life Time Achievement Award. The award comprising a trophy, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs (Rs 500,000) is instituted after legendary film maker V Shantaram, who was head of the Films Division in the past. He has made several movies such as Cherubs of the Mist which showcase the beauty and richness of wildlife.

▼ Henri Tiphagne wins Amnesty International Human Rights Award 2016   [01-29-16]

Indian activist and lawyer Henri Tiphagne has won the Amnesty International Human Rights Award 2016 and he will be honored for his exceptional commitment to human rights. Cash award is being conferred by Amnesty Germany’s foundation, Stiftung Menschenrechte, Förderstiftung Amnesty.

▼ Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously   [01-27-16]

Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami of the Special Forces who was killed while taking part in end to end operations in J &K has received the Ashok Chakra posthumously. This country’s highest peacetime gallantry award was bestowed by President Pranab Mukherjee on his widow Bhavna Goswami on Republic Day. He not only eliminated terrorists but also assisted in evacuation of wounded colleagues before succumbing to his injuries.

Women have won this year’s Padma awards for sports with tennis star Sania Mirza and ace shuttler Saina Nehwal for receiving the nod for the Padma Bhushan while archery expert Deepika Kumari was chosen for Padma Shri on 26th January 2016.

841 personnel have been awarded police medals on Republic Day. ▼ J. K. Rowling receives PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award   [01-27-16]

Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling has received the PEN ALLEN Foundation Literary Service Award. She will be receiving the award at the May 16th literary and human rights group annual spring gala. Previous winners of this award include Tim Stoppard, Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison. PEN has awarded the honour to Rowling for free expression and her two charitable trusts Volant and Lumos. PEN will also honour CEO Michael Pietsch of Hachette Book Group, a US publisher of Rowling’s detective novels under the pen name Robert Galbraith.

Ankita Anand on 14th January 2016 won the European Commission prestigious Lorenzo Natali Media Prize in 2015 in Asia and Pacific amateur category. She has earned the prize for a young woman’s story of facing the diktat of khap panchayats in Haryana with the title Stirrings Beneath the Peepul published in the journal The Equator Linel. Arison Tamfu editor of the Cameron Journal has won the Lorenzo Natali Grand Prize for critical investigative report on the manner in which the UN Climate change negotiations called on nations to make the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Organized by the European Commission’s DG for International Cooperation and Development since 1992. The Prize is divided into two distinct categories- amateur and professional journalism.

▼ India’s Anuradha Roy wins the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2016   [01-18-16]

India’s Anuradha Roy has won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2016 for her novel Sleeping on Jupiter. This deals with the subject of violence against women. At the Fairway Galle Literary Festival in Galle, Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe presented her with the rpize. This novel has been chosen on account of elegance, readability and flair. Other authors and novels in contention for this year’s prize were: Akhil Sharma (Family Life); K.R. Meera (Hangwoman) [translated by J. Devika]; Mirza Waheed (The Book of Gold Leaves), Neel Mukherjee (The Lives of Others) and Raj Kamal Jha (She Will Build Him A City).

Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena has won the 2016 Pritzker Architecture Prize for more socially engaged architecture. Tom Pritzker chairman and president of the Hyatt Foundation has sponsored the prize. Arabian is the first Pritzker laureate from Chile and the 4th from Latin America.

American actor Denzel Washington has been conferred with the honourable Cecil B. DeMille award that honours extraordinary contributions in the field of the entertainment world. This is the 2016 Golden Globes award ceremony. The 61 year old actor, philanthropist, director and producer is remembered for his work in movies like the Pelican Brief and Malcolm X.

The award was conferred by the Financial Times Group’s monthly publication The Banker. Central Banker of the Year 2016 Awards celebrates officials best managed to increase growth and stabilise the economy of the country. Raghuram Rajan was born on February 3, 1963 and is currently the 23rd governor of the RBI. He also served as Chief Economic Adviser to Ministry of Finance, India. He is also the chief economist of the IMF from 2003 to 2007.

The IIT-BHU's decision to dis-empanel social activist , founder of Asha Trust and 2002 Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey from the list of its guest faculty was based on his taking part in "unwanted activities", and the activist claims RSS is behind his ouster. Pandey was visiting faculty in the department of mechanical engineering. The banned documentary Nirbhaya was screened by him and he also took part in Naxal activities according to BHU administration.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named as the recipient of this year’s Four Freedoms Award. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been selected for the prestigious international Four Freedoms Award with organisers lauding great moral leadership in Germany and tackling the crises in Europe. Previous award winners include US President Harry S. Truman and JFK as well as Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan. This is an annual award presented to men and women whose achievements have received the commitment of FDR.

British writer Kate Atkinson on 4th January 2016 won the novel of the year prize at Costa Book Awards 2015. She has won for the second time in 3 years. She won the award for A God in Ruins, a story of war and its aftermath. With this, she became the first author to receive the Costa novel prize three times: for A God in Ruins in 2016, Life After Life in 2013 and Behind the Scenes at the Museum in 1995.

Veteran S. Indian classical vocalist Sanjay Subrahmanyam was conferred with the 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award during the first week of January 2016. He is now the 7th artist to be conferred with this award before attaining 50 years of age.

Veteran South Indian classical vocalists Sanjay Subrahmanyam was on 1 January 2016 conferred with the 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award. The prestigious award was conferred upon him by mathematician Manjul Bhargava at 89th annual conference of the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Indian origin cancer research expert Harpal Singh Kumar on 31st December 2015 was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his work on the prevention and treatment of cancer. Samir Desai, founder of funding circle received a CBE as did Chairman of Sun Mark Ltd. Raminder Singh Ranger. OBE was awarded to Kala Patel and Daljit Lally. MD of Hotel Maiyanho in Leicester, Aatin Ashok Anadkat was awarded a British empire medal. MBE was awarded to Rekha Mehr and Ayesha Hazarika.
