Social activist Urmila Chanam was awarded the Voices of Our Future Award by social networking platform World Pulse connecting women from 190 countries across the world to amplify women’s voices and speed up change

  • The other two recipients are Sadaf Kashif from Pakistan and Carolyn Seaman from Nigeria who were honoured for creating awareness on child marriage and women empowerment.

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto will debut at the International Indian Film Academy Gala in Madrid.

The twenty-fifth G. D. Birla Award for Scientific Research for 2015 has been awarded to Prof. Sanjay Mittal from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

  • Prof. Mittal’s significant contributions have been in the area of Bluff Body Flows - flows past blunt bodies associated with large unsteady separation and leading to large fluid forces.
  • He was instrumental in establishing the High Performance Computing (HPC) facility at IIT Kanpur and heads the National Wind Tunnel Facility.
  • GD Birla award was constituted in 1991 by KK Birla Foundation

Kannada movie Thithi in the third week of June 2016 won two awards- Best Film and Best Script Writers under the Asia New Talent Awards Category at the 19th Shanghai International Film

▼ Panama Papers probe wins journalism award   [06-21-16]

The Panama Papers probe, a collaborative work of more than 100 media organisations including The Indian Express, has won the Data Journalism Awards 2016 for Investigation of the Year.

  • The award was presented at the Global Editors Network (GEN) summit in Vienna.
  • The Panama Papers investigation was based on 2.6 terabyte of data obtained by German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • It has been shared through the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
  • The Data Journalism Awards is hosted by the Global Editors Network, a cross-platform community of editors-in-chief and media innovators.

▼ President Mukherjee honoured by Cote d’Ivoire   [06-16-16]

President Pranab Mukherjee on 14 June 2016 was accorded with Grand Cross National Order of the Republic of Cote D'Ivoirie in a simple ceremony at the President's Palace in Abidjan.

  • It is the highest civilian award of Ivory Coast.
  • He received many honorary degrees but, it is the first such honour accorded to him by a country.
  • The President was honoured during his two days visit to the nation from 14 June to 15 June 2016.
  • It was the first visit of any Indian President to Ivory Coast. In fact, it is the first ever high level visit from India to Ivory Coast.

▼ Pune based diabetes specialist Shashank Shah conferred Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award   [06-16-16]

Pune based diabetes specialist Shashank S Shah has been conferred with the Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award on June 12, 2016. He was awarded at the ADA’s 76th Scientific Sessions from 10 June to 14 June 2016 in New Orleans.

  • The award was given by American Diabetes Association (ADA) for his pioneering research on diabetes in South Asia.
  • He was selected for his research titled Gastric Bypass vs. Medical/Lifestyle Care for Type 2 Diabetes in South Asia with BMI 25-40 kg/m2 - The COSMID Randomised.
  • It is one of the pioneering bariatric surgeons in India and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in Asia.
  • The first Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award was awarded to Dr Vijay Viswanathan who was Diabetologist and Director of MV Hospital for Diabetes, Chennai in June 2014

▼ Indian origin persons of eminence honoured by Queen Elizabeth II   [06-13-16]

Several Indian-origin medics, charity workers, musicians and entrepreneurs were among hundreds of people honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in her annual Birthday Honours list issued today.

  • A total of 1,149 people from the worlds of celebrity, sport, culture, science, politics and charity have been recognised with what are dubbed as the Queen’s “birthday gongs” for their services to the country. This includes:
  • Professor Usha Chakravarthy, Professor of Ophthalmology, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, for services to Ophthalmology in Northern Ireland and voluntary service to managing eye conditions;
  • Bharat Maganlal Mehta, Chief Executive Officer, Trust for London, for services to Finance in the Charitable and Voluntary Sectors.
  • Sewa Singh Mandla for services to the Inter-faith and Community Cohesion, particularly in the Sikh community;
  • Alan Sherear and Rod Stewart were some of the foreign persons of eminence honoured by the Queen

▼ LS MPs among Sansad Ratna awardees for first time   [06-13-16]

For the first time, 4 first time LS MPs were among 5 Parliamentarians honoured with the Sansad Ratna awards. The awards were given away by former RBI governor C. Rangarajan. Award instituted by former President APJ Abdul Kalam is for honouring MPs for civil society for performance.

  • The winners of the award include BJP's PP Chaudhary, representing Pali in Rajasthan, Heena Vijaykumar Gavit, BJP MP from Nandurbar, Shrirang Appa Barne, Shivsena MP from Maval and Congress MP Raajeev Shankarrao Satav from Hingoli, all three from Maharashtra, were the first time MPs who were awarded the 'Sansad Ratna.'
  • Two-time Shiv Sena MP from Shirur in Maharashtra, Shivaji Adhalrao Patil, and former RS member and CPI (M) leader from Kerala, P Rajeev, were also honoured for their work.
▼ Jadavpur University, Kolkata wins national education award   [06-9-16]

Jadavpur University, Kolkata has won the 12th National Youth Parliament Competition for Universities and Colleges conducted by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Thirty institutions from across the country participated in the competition.

  • Merit Trophies were presented to : Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, University of Mumbai, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Port Blair and Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management, Sivsagar, Assam.
  • National Youth Parliament Competition for Universities/Colleges is being organized since 1997-98 to promote among the younger generations the spirit of discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, righteous expression of views and democratic virtues

▼ Paradip port receives national award   [06-8-16]

Paradip Port Trust received Best Performance Award from Shipping Ministry.

  • The Port showed best improvement in efficiency parameters for the year 2015-16. Shri N. Vaiyapuri, Deputy Chairman, PPT received the award during the review meeting held at Panaji, Goa.
  • Paradip Port Trust has achieved outstanding efficiency parameters among the major Ports. Vessel turn round time has been drastically reduced by 36% from 7.01 days in 2014-15 to 4.50 days during 2015-16.
  • Similarly, berth day output has also increased by 19% from 17,736 metric tonnes to 21,139 metric tonnes.

▼ IOC awards Olympic Order to IOA President N Ramachandran   [06-7-16]

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the prestigious Olympic Order to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president N Ramachandran. The award is given in acknowledgement for Ramachandran’s outstanding contribution to the Olympic movement. Former IOA president, the late B.S. Adityan was also honoured with the same award, in 1995.

  • Ramachandran was elected president in February 2014
  • IOC is an NPO with 100 active members and 32 honorary members

▼ Sudarshan Pattnaik wins sand sculpture award   [06-6-16]

Renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won gold medal on in people’s choice prize at world championship festival of sand sculpting Russe, 2016 in Bulgaria for his sand sculpture – “Drugs kill Sports”.

  • After recently bagging a gold medal in Moscow for creating a beautiful sand sculpture on Peace and Nonviolence, Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik and his skills have done the nation proud, yet again.

▼ VO Chidambaranar Port bags National Award for Excellence in Cost Management   [06-3-16]

The VO Chidamaranar Port has bagged National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost Accountants of India under the category of Public Service Sector- Small. The port participated in the 13th National Awards for Excellence in Cost Management-2015, organised by The Institute of Cost Accountants of India. This is the third time this port is receiving the award , the earlier years being 2008 and 2012.

  • The Institute of Cost Accountants of India, a statutory body under an Act of Parliament, presents awards for excellence in Cost Management to promote and recognize Cost Management practices in the Corporate Sector.
  • The awards under various categories were selected by a Jury panel headed by Hon’ble Justice Mr. V.N.Khare, former Chief Justice of India and persons of eminence from Industry, Government, Judiciary and CMA profession.

▼ Renowned music composer AR Rahman wins award   [06-1-16]

Renowned Indian music composer AR Rahman was on 30 May 2016 awarded with the Japan's Fukuoka prize 2016 for his outstanding contribution towards creating, preserving and showcasing South Asian traditional fusion music.

  • For the year 2015, noted Indian Historian Ramchandra Guha was conferred with Fukuoka Prize in academic category.
  • Rahman was also the 1995 recipient of the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for his contributions to music.
  • He has also won Academy and BAFTA awards
