▼ Sachin Singh, third boxer to win AIBA Youth World Championships medal   [11-29-16]

Sachin Singh on 27th Nov 2016 became the third Indian boxer to bag the gold medal at the AIBA Youth World Championships.

The tournament was held in St. Petersburg Russia.

Sachin recorded a victory over Cuban national champion Jorge Grinan in the 49 kg weight class.

Sachin defeated his rival 5-0 to record an Indian triumph.

The 16-year-old joined Thokchom Nanano Singh (2008) and Vikas Krishnan (2010) as a winner of this gold medal.

India finished the tournament with one gold and bronze.

Naman Tanwar had settled for a bronze in the 91 kg after losing in the semifinal.

In 2014, India secured just a bronze medal.

BFI or Boxing Federation of India announced cash prizes and incentives for the two winners.

▼ Jail term for coaches encouraging drug abuse in Russia   [11-23-16]

President Vladimir Putin on 22nd Nov signed a law introducing prison term for coaches and medical staff who coerce athletes into using banned performance enhancing drugs.

Law comes into force as Russia seeks to clean up its image after the evidence of state sponsored doping that saw its team and Paralympics squad excluded from the Olympics this year.

Legislation calls for a one year jail term for officials who force a minor to dope or resort to violence and threats to make athletes dope.

Russian parliament and senate approved the draft law in November.

Law does not outline any punishments for athletes who abuse drugs; administration said further legislation is planned.

State backed doping in Russia was documented by the McLaren report by the WADA and released just before the Rio games.

A 15 year old, Bastab Tapan Bordoloi hailing from Jorhat in Assam has made the nation proud by bagging 5 gold medals and a silver at the just concluded South Asian Aquatic Championship in Sri Lanka.

  • Bastab was encouraged to take up swimming and started his career at the age of 9.
  • He bagged his maiden medal at the All Assam State Level Championship in 2012.
  • He was the only swimmer from the NE region who participated in 6 events at the championship.

India has prevailed 3-2 over Pakistan to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy hockey title.

  • This was the title clash of the fourth edition of the tournament.
  • This marks the first time the teams were meeting in the finals of the continental tournament since India dethroned Pakistan as the Asian Games champions in Incheon, South Korea in the year 2014.
  • India has also won the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy, defeating Pakistan in 2011.

Indian lifter Shivam Saini clinched the silver in senior and gold in junior category at the 2016 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships on 28th Oct 2016.

  • Competing in the 94 kg senior men’s weight category, Saini has bagged a silver medal with the lift of 132 in snatch and 168 in clean and jerk for 300 kgs.
  • In the junior event, Saini won the top prize as he managed 132 in snatch and 168 in clean and jerk according to a release issued by the Indian Weightlifting Federation.
