Tell us something about yourself.
Hello. I am Shashi Kumar, a final year engineering student from Jai Narain
College Of Technology, Bhopal. My specialization is in Mechanical Engineering.
I recently appeared for GATE & scored 93%ile.
Why did you choose to take up GATE?
I was fed up of seeing all students running towards software companies. I did
not want to land up in mass recruiting companies. So, I decided to do M.Tech
during my 6th semester.
How does GATE help a person in developing his career?
I feel, GATE is a much better option for engineering students specially those
belonging to core branches. It immensely helps in developing your career as you
are going to be at the entrance of your master’s degree. You'll get better
opportunities to bring your career on a fast track with the MNCs.
How did you study to crack the exam?
As I decided to take up M.Tech in my 6th semester, it was really tough to decide
from where to start with for my preparation. Finally, I took the brochure of
GATE and saw the syllabus, brought the whole material of BRILLIANT, after which
I was totally busy with my books for 1 year.
What study material did you use for the preparation?
I consulted many previous year’s GATE qualifiers. All of them suggested refer to
the BRILLIANT’s study material & I did that.
Does it help to join coaching classes?
Yes. It is quite beneficial to join a coaching institute so as to have expert
advice, tips and a regular practice with the syllabus. This also help to stay
updated with the course of GATE.
When should a candidate aspiring to crack GATE start preparing?
Actually, a candidate aspiring to qualify GATE with a good %ile should start the
preparation from the 1st semester. GATE covers the topics starting from your
1st semester. If anyone misses out that time, he should start from at least 4th
semester, as he'll get chance in his 6th semester also to appear for the exam.
What helps in securing a good percentile in the exam?
To score high %ile you should:
a. Update your study time to time.
b. Not ignore any of the subjects, as each subject is equally important.
c. Not attempt any question which you are not sure about as this will decline
your %ile.
d. First, try to attempt questions for which you know the answers well.
e. Practice more unsolved papers before taking the exam.
f. Learn to manage your time. Set a clock for yourself as you sit to take a
practice question paper.
What are the prospects for a candidate after he/she clears the exam?
After qualifying GATE you'll be called by IITs , NITs & other institutions
for counseling. You can then opt for the branch, you want to specialize in.
Any advice you would like to offer to the candidates preparing for or aspiring
to take up GATE?
For the candidates who wish to appear for and qualify GATE, pay your full
attention to your studies right from the beginning. You can join a good
institute for better preparation & regular update about the questions asked
during the exam. Try to follow some study material for GATE as it seems to be
of great use to everyone.
