    Water passing over the runner blades in discharged to tail race through a gradually increasing area called as draft tube. It increases the head on the turbine by an amount equal to the height of runner outlet above the tail race in reaction turbine.

    In reaction turbine, the entire passage from head race to tail race is totally enclosed and it does not communicate with atmosphere. It helps reaction turbine to run under pressure.

    The function of draft tube is to converts kinetic energy of water at exit of runner into useful pressure energy and the water discharges into tail race at very slow velocity increasing the pressure head. It increases the efficiency of turbine.
