    1) Machine shafts: It is a short rotating shaft which forms an integral part of machine.

    - Spindle and crankshafts are machine shafts. These shafts are also subjected to torque, bending and axial force.

    - Crankshafts perform the function of converting reciprocating motion into rotational motion.


    2) Transmission shafts: These shafts are used to transmit power.

    - Line shafts and counter shafts are transmission shafts. These transmission shafts are subjected to torque, bending moment and axial force.

    - Line shaft is directly driven by prime mover and counter shaft is driven by main shaft through belt, chain or gear drive.
