At a fixed inlet size and casing, a centrifugal pump does not have fixed volume. Increasing the diameter of the impeller or the rotational speed will lead to increased head and increased flow rate.

Therefore, a centrifugal pump has large discharge capacity than that of the reciprocating pump. But both the pumps have their own applicable advantages.

Centrifugal pump is used where high flow rate is required but high pressure is not required.

Reciprocating pump is used where high pressure or high capability of overcoming the resistance to flow is required.
