    Application Layer : This layer supports application and end-user processes. Gateway is used to support address and port translation for certain protocols such as, FTP etc.

    Network Layer : This layer is responsible for packet forwarding including routing through Routers.

    Data link Layer : It is responsible for media access control, flow control and error checking. In data link layer bridges offer major improvements over repeaters. Bridges could also interconnect devices on incompatible networks as long as they conformed to the same data link standards.

    Physical Layer : The physical layer underlying the logical data structures of the higher level function level in a network. Repeater is used in physical layer, it receives a signal and retransmits it at a higher level.
