    Torsional shear stress: This stress is induced due to twisting moment or torque

    Given: Torsional shear stress = 5 N/mm2, Direct compressive stress = 7 N/mm2

    Formula: τmax = √(σ/2)2 + τ2

    here,
    τmax = maximum shear stress
    τ = torsional shear stress
    σ = direct compressive stress

    Solution:

    Substituting the given values we get,

    τmax = √(σ/2)2 + τ2

    = √(7/2)2 + 52

    = 6.10 N/mm2
