    Shear stress: The component of stress which is coplanar with the material cross section is called as shear stress. It is the force tending to cause deformation of material along the plane which is parallel to the imposed stress.

    Given: allowable shear stress = 80 MPa, tensile load = 300 kN, l1 = 140 mm, l2 = 100 mm, l3 = 140

    Formula: τ = P / (l1 + l2 + l3 ) t

    here, P = tensile load, l1 = l2 = l3 are the length of welds,

    Solution:

    Substituting the given values we get,

    Shear stress τ = P / (l1 + l2 + l3 ) t

    80 = 300 x 103 / ( 140 +100 + 140) x t

    t = 9.868 mm

    Weld throat thickness for the parallel fillet weld is 9.868 mm
