    - After selecting the material for elements. The type of failure is identified before determining the dimensions.

    - Depending upon the application, the factor of safety of the material is identified. The design stress can be determined by knowing factor of safety and material strength.

    - Considering forces and permissible stresses acting on the elements, the dimensions are determined. Later these dimensions are modified by selecting standard parts or by convenience of assembly and manufacturing.

    - Finally the design report is prepared considering all the factors.
