    - Surge tanks: Surge tanks protect penstock due to sudden variation of flow or velocity of water. Surge tank is located near the power house on high ground.

    - Trash rack: It is provided to prevent entry of debris into dams from forebay. The nozzles of an impulse turbine may choke up if trash rack is not provided as debris may damage turbine runners.

    - Forebays: Small reservoir between end of water passage and turbine is called as forebay. It absorbs flow variations by storing water when load increases and supplying it to the turbine when load increases.

    - Anchors: Penstock is supported by concrete blocks known as anchors.
