    Reaction turbine does not operate at the atmospheric pressure. The runner of the reaction turbine is always under pressure. The draft tube is used to discharge the water passing over the runner blades to the tail race. The small end of draft is connected to outer opening of the casing and its bigger end is deeply submerged into the tail race by around 1 m depth from rail race level. Draft tube increases the pressure head.

    Therefore, for better operation of reaction turbine and to improve its efficiency, the runner of reaction turbine needs to be run full of water.
