    - Gear drives cannot be used for long centre distances as they are compact while belt drives can be used for this purpose.

    - Gear drives are used to transmit power between shafts which have parallel (spur gear), intersecting (bevel gears), non-intersecting and perpendicular (worm gears) or non-intersecting and non-parallel axes (crossed helical gears).

    - Gear drives are also used for high reduction ratios.

    - These drives have long life but are affected by dirt or dust and hence require casing or cover.
