    - The total surface area per unit weight is called as specific surface (cm2/gm).

    - Specific surface depends upon shape, size and surface conditions of particles.

    - Adsorption method is used determine specific surface. In this method the surface of powder particles is covered with single layer or multi-molecular layer layer of an adsorbed gas.

    - A sample maintained at liquid nitrogen temperature consists of adsorbing nitrogen to form mono-molecular layer from the amount of gas required to form this layer on the surface of known weight of powder. Here the number of molecules required are calculated and total surface area can be calculated if area covered by a single molecule is known.
