    - Rankine-Gordon's empirical formula is known as Rankine's formula.

    - Crushing load is responsible for the failure of short columns and buckling load is responsible for the failure of long columns.

    - The formula used to calculate crippling load is given as

    Rc = σc A / [1 + α (Le / k)2]

    α is Rankine's constant, σc is the crushing stress, k is the radius of gyration and Le is the effective length.
