Is it justified to have 33% quota reservation for women in police force?

Women empowerment is the word that echo now and then. Government is busy bringing in the new steps to bring focus back on women. In the recent steps, Gujarat new CM Anandiben Patel announced the 33% quota reservation for women. It was announced at a time when she was addressing a parade at Gujarat Police Academy. Do you think is it justified to have 33% quota reservation for women in police force?

Yes

• As per the United Nations, it is good to have 222 cops per one lakh citizens, but India just has 106. The step will encourage more women to come ahead and be a part of police force.

• Women have always been confined to home boundaries or other office related jobs. It will encourage women to break the social resistance and come up at higher police ranks in India.

• The crime rate in respect to rapes, molestation and demeaning the weaker sections of society is increasing. Higher number of women police force will make the women victims to come ahead and register the cases.

• Women can fight the gender bias present in the Indian Police forces and can improve the entire police system by working on lead roles.

• Sometimes there is no other way than reservation to bring in the required change, and therefore women deserve this special privilege.

No

• Recruiting more women doesn’t means that rape victims or other women victims will get justice. For justice, honest officers are required, not women officers.

• It is certainly give a wrong signal to criminals who will commit more crimes just because the regions don’t have a woman officer.

• 33% quota is already present in police force but that is not filled due to the stringent entry criteria for physical tests. Making these criteria easy is not going to help the police system in any way.

• The women’s pending reservation bill and quota in police force should not be mixed as in police force it is not about presentation but about the overall performance.

• There is no need to keep special quota for women for if they will be better than men in the police force, they will qualify on their own.

Conclusion

Keeping the quota on the idea that it will reduce crime rates for will help women victims is completely baseless. Only honest officers can bring a change, irrespective of the gender. Police vacancies must be filled with deserving candidates. It is not just another profession, but a serious profession that comes with responsibility of looking after the safety of people.

  • Reservation is an unfair criteria in any sector, as it drags the real talents behind the screen and makes them unable to climb up the success ladder. When we talk of the police and the defence services, it is totally unfair to consider reservations of any sort. Such services demands high physical stamina and calibre. Reservations into such cadre would just lead to a widespread disaster.

India is already facing a great trauma due to the failure of law and order situation in the country. With such reservations coming into play, the situation would just become more and more worse. The police force needs much alertness, physical strength and stamina to withstand the adverse points and scenarios. Such a service does not call for any lacuna just in order to get some sect or group of people ahead.

Women empowerment is a good thing, but that would not come up just with the reservation. Women empowerment comes from their inner strength and potential, and their ability to withstand, face and compete the men dominated society. Reservation in the police force would not help women to fight the battle in the factual world. Thus, it would be justified to have the police selection criteria without taking any reservations into consideration.
