Is it wise to opt for abortion if to be born child suffers from serious disorder?

Every couple especially woman, wait for the day when she can become mother. It is called as a most special moment in a women’s life. But there are times, when the special moment can become some stressful moments with it. If during the medical checkup, the to-be parents come to know that the child is suffering from a serious disorder, should they abort the child?

Yes

• Women can become pregnant again, and therefore there is no need to go for delivery when you are aware of the fact.

• It is a competitive world where people with good physical and mental health find it tough to survive and then how will a kid with disorder survive?

• There will be so many additional expenses that have to be incurred on the treatment of the child with disorder.

• It is said that prevention is better than cure, so aborting a child when you are well aware with the problem is a justified step.

• Instead of giving birth to a child with disorder it is better to adopt a child and incur the necessary expenses on the upbringing of adopted child.

No

• There are problems with anyone, and there are ways to deal with the problem. It doesn’t mean that child should be aborted.

• It would be so inhumane to go ahead and abort a child just because you know child has got a disorder.

• Physical or mental problems can happen at any stage. So, if it happens in the future will the parents live the child?

• As said that it is a competitive world and even people with proper mental and physical health are not able to survive. So, allow that child to be normal like them by allowing child to face the problems of life.

• The medical science has advanced a lot, and there are solutions for most of the mental and physical problems. Even if the perfect solutions are not there, they can at least make child live a good life.

Conclusion

Abortion has become a normal thing in today’s life. Even when the child is supposed to be normal, they go for abortion. There are hardly few parents who are not practical in today’s world. Everyone is more concerned about their freedom and privacy. In such a world who will even care to give a birth to a child who has got a serious disorder. It will demand time, attention and money that are rarely found in present time. However, it is inhumane to abort a child just because you got to know that the child suffers from serious disorder.

  • The answer is definitely affirmative, the reason being, it would be wiser to save a life from the feeling of guilt and dependence throughout their life. It is fair enough to abort the child in the early stage of life. The life once born would require immense courage and will power to support their living throughout their lifetime. With modern medical facilities there are several tests available to assess the health of the infant in mother’s womb, and it can mostly be diagnosed at early stage if the unborn child is affected by any serious disorder, namely down syndrome, HIV, deformity etc…

At the end of the day it is a personal choice that the parents and close family to make, but they need to consider whether they will be in a position to care for the child with the disorder which may be painful for remaining life for both child and carer, would they be in position to provide for the medical attention required from time to time (while it is a sensitive & emotional issue – remember the cost of treatment may not be bearable to all), would they be able to see the child suffer discrimination & humiliation – whilst most of us think we are modern and well mannered, it is not uncommon for others to discriminate people who are differently abled may it be school, university, job opportunity, future family prospects and so on. After all these, consider who will take care of the child once the parents are no more. There may be exceptions but for most - in county like India, it will have several challenges for the child to survive and live a happy life.

In some countries there is better acceptability in society for differently abled people, but in many there is still need for the society & government to build this kind of environment.
