China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Dialogue: Benefiting the Region


The China-Afghanistan-Pakistan trilateral dialogue was recently held emphasising a collective regional approach for countering issues and resolving challenges. The meet was attended by scholars, diplomats and researchers. China's ambassador Sun Weidong said during the meet,“Cooperation between China, Afghanistan and Pakistan will benefit the region.” He also added that“Building mutual trust and friendly consultations between the two countries should be encouraged to promote cooperation.” The two day international conference was organised by Pakistan China institute and German political foundation, Konrad Adenauer Stiflung. Ambassador Weidong also indicated that Afghanistan and Pakistan share close bonds with China and there is a good relationship between all the 3 nations.

Afghanistan's ambassador, Janan Musa Musazai indicated “It's timely and important Conference. We look forward to welcoming the next round of trilateral dialogue in Afghanistan.” The ambassador made this announcement with respect to the next trilateral conference to be held at Kabul. The first round of the trilateral dialogue was held in Beijing in the year 2013. The next session after the current conference will be held in Afghanistan.

“It's a unique opportunity”, the Afghan envoy said “for us to extend cooperation and tackle common threats and challenges together” and achieve the desired goal of “security, stability and prosperity.” Ambassador Sun Weidong also emphasised: “Building mutual trust and friendly consultations between the two countries should be encouraged to promote cooperation.” The ambassador highlighted cooperation in all key areas and identified three threats in the region, “terrorism, extremism and narcotics.” The Chinese envoy also stressed that “China is also ready to extend cooperation in this regard to Afghanistan and Pakistan.”He also said “China is devoted for the early settlement of Afghan issue. We have taken an active part.”

Ambassador Musazai said “Afghanistan and Pakistan are natural friends and partners joined by inseparable bonds.” The ambassador also talked about the construction of the Peshawar-Jalalabad and Chaman-Kandhar railway lines for bring the two nations together. Foundations were also laid for a long and stable friendship with China which is Afghanistan's biggest investor.

The trilateral dialogue was chaired by Ambassador Sultan Ahmad Bahin, director general of 3rd Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Ambassador Luo Zhaohui, director general of Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, and Muhammad Iftikhar Anjum, director general of Afghanistan Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. All the nations present agreed to strengthen cooperation and security in the region. Efforts were made to ensure that the dialogue plays an important role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
