Should Taj Mahal be handed over to the state Waqf Board?

Taj Mahal, a historical monument of love, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz, has become a topic and reason of turf war. What has always remained as a masterpiece of world heritage has now become a reason of sectarian claims over its legal ownership. Azam Khan, UP Muslim Waqf leader has demanded Taj Mahal to be declared as a property of the UP Waqf Board. Do you agree with Waqf minster? Should Taj Mahal be handed over to the state Waqf Board?

Yes

• Waqf Board takes care of the Muslim sites of burial and graves, and has every right to demand ownership of Taj Mahal.

• Taj Mahal is a mausoleum and mausoleum is a waqf, and as therefore as per the simple rule it is waqf property.

• Declaration of a Waqf property does not imply that the Waqf board becomes taker of its revenue. They will only get a part of earnings coming from the mausoleum, and therefore it is ok to hand it over to Waqf board.

No

• If Taj Mahal control is given to Waqf board, it will indicate that it belongs to a particular group whereas Taj Mahal belongs to Indians as well as whole world.

• It is nothing but communalism of Taj Mahal and a game of dirty politics ahead of the 2017 UP Assembly election.

• Instead of giving control of Taj Mahal to Waqf board, the properties coming under the Waqf board should be transferred to the Archaeological Survey of India. The board has become a house of corruption.

• Azam Khan is the same person who said in February 2013 that Taj Mahal should be demolished, and now he wants to become caretaker of Taj Mahal.

• Historical monuments elsewhere in the world like Saint Basil's Cathedral in Russia, Parthenon in Greece, Hagia Sophia Museum and others are owned, controlled and run by government, and not the religious parties. If today, Taj Mahal is given to waqf board, tomorrow other religious group will come to exercise their claim on other national properties which can not be allowed to happen.

Conclusion

November 22 is termed as development day, and the political parties and leaders just want to highlight the day by bringing in the unnecessary controversial issues. Azam Khan has always remained in limelight because of his controversial statements. It is shocking that after 300 years all of a sudden the Waqf Board realizes that Taj Mahal is their property. Well, they should take a reality check as Taj Mahal is a monument symbolizing love, constructed by Hindu and Muslims together and belongs to Indians.

  • Monuments like Taj Mahal are heritage of india. These are accessible to each indian but if it would be handed over to shia waqf board, it means it relate to a particular religion. So it would be not easy to visit these monuments.
These monuments are national property and should remain the same.

  • Let me tell u that Taj Mahal is not a piece of cake which everyone want to share....Its a monument dear...which is one of the 7 wonders of the world...And no one wants that this wonder is to be given to any community or any particular group who fr dere own reputation and politics will ruin dis monument...

I think Taj mahal shud not be handed to waqf board...becoz dey have a fight for dere own comunity itself....Sunni think dat dey r d true owner of taj mahal and shia think dey r d true owner of taj mahal....Where ws dis true owner when taj mahal ws toxicated by air pollution....At once how come everyone became the owner of Taj mahal....Stop Dis DIRTY POLITICS....becoz TAJ MAHAL is the heart of India...nd if u try to destroy it or allow some irresponsible person to handle it,whole India wud have to suffer it...nd TAJ MAHAL will became history and nothing else....Thanks..

  • Taj Mahal had been the mausoleum for all these years since the time it was built. Neither the Taj has been constructed few days back, nor the Waqf board is all that new to come up with the controversies of the ownership issue. If the Waqf Board is so much anxious of taking the ownership, this should have been done many years back.

Taj Mahal is a national treasure and it generates revenue to the Government. It should not be allowed for any party of board to take the ownership of the national treasure. We have a lot many monuments in India built by the emperors of different religion. If every religious board comes up with the claim of ownership, then we will lack the bonding of being Indians. Things will start getting split up between different communities in lieu of caste, religion, region, dialect and so on.

There is no end for dispute. Instead of trying to look to these monuments as a source of income, if we can inculcate the feeling of being Indians, we would definitely feel the ownership of not only Taj Mahal but every historical monument of India by heart. The feeling of ownness comes from within, which is the call of mind and emotion and not a manipulated output of brain.

There is no point in handing over the historical monuments, as the uniformity could be retained only if all the monuments are taken care of under single head, which could be none other than our Government.
