    Company Secretary is a professional course administered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980. Company Secretary course gives the knowledge and understanding to the students which is required in corporate financial and legal affairs. A company Secretary’s work is very much important for a company’s management.

    Performance and growth of industry in India

    With the rapid corporatisation, the role of a company secretary has become even more prominent over the past couple of years. Any company/organization that has a paid-up capital of Rs. 50 lakhs or more requires to appoint a company secretary to administer legal matters of that company. This norm has been laid down by the Companies Act. This has increased the demand of company secretaries in India.

    Options and Opportunities

    Company Secretary acts as a vital link between the Company, Board of Directors, Shareholders and other regulatory agencies and thus has a wide variety of roles to play such as Compliance officer, Corporate planner, Strategic Manager. Apart from these functions he also looks after legal, financial, personnel and administrative functions. He is required to handle matters related to central/state sales tax, labour laws, excise laws, and corporate law.

    Courses Available

    Company Secretaryship course is divided into three stages:
    - Fondation course,
    - Executive course,
    - Professional course.

    Qualification required

    For Foundation Programme candidates need to pass Senior secondary examination (10+2). Candidates with graduation, post graduation(excluding fine arts) and those who have passed ICWAI or ICAI or any other exam conducted by any other accountancy Institution in India or abroad recognised by the Council of Institute can directly apply for the Executive Programme without doing the Foundation Course. Only after passing the Executive Programme candidates can apply for the Final Course. In addition, the candidate has to undergo practical training of 15 months after passing Executive Programme.

    Entrance exams

    To become a Company Secretary, the candidate need to pass the three levels:

    - Company Secretary examination.
    - Foundation Programme,
    - Executive Programme,
    - Professional Programme

    The exams are conducted by the ICSI in the month of June and December every year. In addition, after passing Executive Programme or Professional Programme candidates has to undergo 15 months of practical training to become eligible for the membership as a Company Secretary.
