Prohibiting drinking on beaches of Goa - An effective way to curb molestation

Prohibiting drinking on beaches of Goa - An effective way to curb molestation

Goa has always been a hot spot for not only international tourists but also for the domestic tourists to relax and spend a few days on the beaches. Because of it being a happening place and so does the number of tourists increase and so will the nuisance, but does that mean a ban on alcohol is the only solution??

For:

- The act of prohibiting drinking on the Goan beaches would help in reducing eve teasing, which often takes place under the influence of alcohol
- Goa beaches are found littered by broken bottles, which often results in injuries to the tourists, the act will hence help in curbing these incidents to a great extent.
- It will help in conserving and protecting the tourist places
- It could lead to arrest of violators.

Against:

- Banning alcohol on the beaches is not the only solution, as people can drink elsewhere and still create the nuisance on the beaches
- Better policing facilities and placing of garbage bins, could lead to a better observance of the laws
- Beaches are for relaxation – but if tourist’s feel too constrained they would opt for other destination which would lead to a loss for the tourist industry of India
- Efficient enforcement of the laws is not there because, authorities are more inclined for moral policing rather than actual policing
- The prohibitory orders cannot be implemented on licensed shacks or liquor outlets
- Business of vendors will suffer as they cannot serve the liquor in their premises

Conclusion:

- Ban is not the solution to each and every problem that arises. We just need to strengthen our laws to avoid all such incidents happening in the near future

  • The decision to prohibit drinking on the beaches of Goa to curb molestation is not surprising or shocking news. With the degree of unwanted events taking place in Goa, it was very obvious that something like this would be decided. But I completely disagree that by banning alcohol on the Goa beaches would curb the molestation rates. The direct equation of molestation to the influence of alcohol is completely false. Alcohol is not the reason as to why people involve themselves into such derogatory activities. If this was so then alcohol should be banned everywhere else too. Moreover, just by banning it on the beaches does not ensure that people cannot drink from elsewhere. What needs to be done is to ensure that we have a strict policing system across our nation especially in areas which are prone to these incidents. By maintaining a proper law and order and strict vigilance by the police these incidents can be reduced to a great extent. By doing so the tourism of Goa will also not be affected and Goa will continue to be a hot spot for international as well as domestic travelers.

  • For:
    • In Goa liquor is cheap and readily available to everyone. This has encouraged unlimited beach drinking among tourists which in return has increased the cases of molestation of women. By curbing this habit of drinking on beaches, the cases of molestation would be decreased.

    • Beaches will become safer for tourists, especially for women. It will help in controlling the people who intentionally try to misbehave at such places.

    • It will also help in controlling the issue of eve-teasing.

    • It is also pushing down the business of the bars and restaurants as they cannot serve the liquor in their premises, leaving the state with less tax revenues as it is quite a large sector.

    • The important justification for prohibiting drinking is that it is eroding the brand equity of Goa.

    • This will also keep people from littering the beach surroundings.

    Against:
    • Prohibiting drinking is not the solution to the problem. There is the need to make more strict laws which can take care of all such incidents.

    • It is a misconception that drinking results in molesting. Drinking is not the only reason behind such incidents. This strategy of combating such incidents by prohibiting alcohol on beaches is totally wrong.

    • Drinking is a part of their local culture and it has never harmed anyone.

    • Instead of prohibiting drinking and sit back it would be more sensible to have Goa's beaches properly policed.

    • Such move could have negative consequences on Goa tourism as well as tourist industry of India. As tourists from all over the world come here for relaxation, but if such ban is put then tourists could opt for other locations.

    • In order to stop crime against woman, the authorities in India need to stop moral policing and start proper policing, with serious implementation of existing laws. By curbing the use of alcohol will only drive tourists away, not unruliness, from our streets and sands.

    • Banning alcohol on the beaches is not the only solution, as people can drink elsewhere and still create the nuisance on the beaches.

Today’s Generation has defined new ways of enjoyment; one of them is drinking. It has become so much popular that people are getting addicted to it easily. And this has destroyed many lives. Alcohol has become not only an individual’s problem but also a topic of concern for the nation. Alcohol in medical terms is sometimes used as a medicine. Small consumption of alcohol can help in a good sleep. But on the other hand over consumption of Alcohol can lead to sleep disorders and can affect the function of Internal Organs. We can say that Alcohol is not only helpful but and over use can be disasters. Goa the biggest tourist destination in India is also the largest consumer of alcohol. The prices of alcohol in Goa are much cheaper than any other place in India. Alcohol has become a Fashion in Goa and it is trending in other parts of the Goa too.

Why people drink? It’s because people thinking drinking is an type of enjoyment and drinking can make them forget their worries; they think Drinking can help them come out of their problems.

Drinking should be banned in public areas like beaches, parks etc. In these areas people come for relaxing and enjoyment, and if people start drinking in such places the non-drinkers may feel uncomfortable. People will stop visiting such places and this can degrade the value of that place. When it comes to Goa, Goa is a tourist place and people from around the world come over here for enjoyment. Some of them may be regular drinkers; some of them may not be even like drinking. So considering both types of people we should ban Drinking in such places especially in Goa.

Molestation has been the most major issue in India. More & more subjects are introduced day-by-day. Not only Indian but many foreign tourists have been affected due to it. Goa has always been a major tourist attraction for such foreign tourists along with Indian tourists. And these days our government is trying to eliminate such issues & it has started to do so by implementing new Rules & Regulations, one of which is to prohibit drinking on beaches of Goa.

First of all we have to understand the psychology behind the scenario. Drinking doesn’t always result in molesting & it is also not the only reason behind it. Prohibiting is not always the only solution for every problem. If a person wants to drink, then he can do that away from a beach & then come back & cause nuisance there. Also prohibiting alcohol would affect its vendors. It will have a major effect as selling alcohol in Goa is quite a large sector. Many of the tourists who visit the beaches in Goa usually visit there to unwind & have some drinks. Prohibiting drinking may also result in decrease in the percentage of tourists.

These are some points which have to be taken under consideration but it also has some positive points. Prohibiting drinking would make sure that people won’t litter the beach surroundings. It can help to ensure safety of the visitors. It can also help in controlling the people those who intentionally try to do such misbehavior. Tourists, particularly women could gain some confidence to roam freely around the locale. It could help controlling the issue of eve-teasing.

To conclude, Prohibiting drinking is not the solution for an issue like molestation, as ban is not the only way to stop the problems. Strengthening our laws to eradicate such incidents can be an effective solution.
