Animals in zoos are not fed and looked after properly

Animals in zoos are not fed and looked after properly. Are our zoos cruel to wild animals? What is your point of view?

To an extent I believe that animals in zoo are not fed and looked after properly. I am making this statement based on my experience in Delhi and some other Zoos.

The condition of the animals is such that it feels that they are not fed adequately .They are generally very low in their energy level. Even the concrete iron cages in which they live have rusted. There is not even a single blade of grass on them so that animals can graze while sitting inside the cage if they feel like. Some cages are so small that animals can barely move inside them.

The worst part is that, it has been noted a couple of times that the personnel in the zoos who are responsible for taking care of the animals are not very friendly and polite towards them. Neither do the animals exhibit a very happy frame of mind. Some animals are also seen exhibiting neurotic and abnormal behaviours like pacing, head bobbing or extreme agitation. Some animals have visible injuries on their body. Whether adequate medical help is provided to them is questionable.

In some areas of the zoo, absolutely no care takers are present and visitors have been seeing feeding food to the animals like pop corns etc with no one to stop them. As a result, some animals feel scared when a unique food item is thrown in their cage; while others eat it and become sick. Even the security measures are inadequate both inside and outside the zoo. Visitors also try to tease and taunt animals but unfortunately no personnel are present to stop such activities.

Even the layout of the Zoo is not very well planned. It is common observation that prey animals are housed in close proximity to the predators in lots of areas, thereby causing stress to both type of animals. Some social primates are housed in isolation. For example, it is a common observation in the Delhi Zoo that an elephant is chained alone with his both front legs in an open space. This is inhumane.

To fight these circumstances of the animals in zoos, PETA has become very active in investigating nearly 30 zoos throughout India since July 2005, and their investigation reports have revealed appalling neglect, decrepit facilities and animal suffering on a massive scale in all these zoos. These findings were shared with the Supreme Court which is now taking active steps to address these issues and improve the quality of life of animals in the zoos.

  • I disagree with this statement that animals in zoos are not fed and looked after properly. In today’s world where animals are on the verge of becoming extinct and are endangered, there species can be protected only by providing proper care to them. And this can be done only when they are not left in the wild on themselves and are rather under human control and security. When animals are kept in zoos their eating and survival needs are taken care of by the zoo caretakers. Proper food is provided to them at regular intervals of time and they don’t die out of starvation. When sick and not well, these animals are properly treated by certified vets and given medications. Had they been in the wild they would have probably died. Most of the reputed zoos are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and maintain high standards in providing care to the animals. The zoos try as much as possible to provide a natural habitat to the animals so that they get the feel of their natural environment and don’t feel the captivity. A man made natural habitat is made for them for their ease and comfort. If these animals are left in the wild, either they will be hunted by predators or will die due to absence of food. Thus, when kept in the zoos they are properly taken care of.
