  • Introduction

Electrical engineering is one of the fastest growing fields of engineering which deals with the study and application of electricity and electronics. This field is an amalgamation of electrical, electronics and communication, computer engineering etc. There are four well known branches of Electrical Engineering which are power, electronics, communication, and control systems. Importance of Electrical engineering lies in the areas of generating electricity, its transmission and distribution. Today Electrical Engineers have become indispensable to the society because of the increasing demand for electrical energy, the development in audio and video communication systems, and the automation in industry. The main job of an electrical engineer is to design and develop more efficient electrical machinery, power systems, and control equipment for the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and telecommunication.

Performance and growth of industry in India

In recent times everything from house to industry requires electricity to function, giving tremendous career prospects in this field in India as well as in other developed countries across the world. With rapid globalization huge demand for technically qualified engineers has arise to keep pace with growing industrial needs. In short electrical engineering has a wide scope of applicability and it varies depending upon different needs.

    Options and Opportunities

In India various job options are available to Electrical engineers. They can work in power plants, whether atomic, hydel or thermal power plants. They can also get jobs in both small and large public and private sector industries such as railways, civil aviation, and all types of manufacturing plants. They can also get into teaching or continue with research in laboratories. Employers from computer-technology corporations, manufacturing companies, IT industry, and health care equipment manufacturing industry, power generation and transmission, railways, chemical companies and telephone companies are hiring candidates with good knowledge in this field.
Electrical graduates are also get employment in Electricity Boards/Utility companies and large industries as engineers and managers, responsible for installation, maintenance, operation of power handling equipments and systems. Industries manufacturing large electrical machines and equipments employ engineers in design, production and testing. Electrical engineers also find employment in atomic power plants, hydroelectric power plants as well as thermal power plants. Many electrical engineering graduates opt for careers in the food, pulp and paper, chemical, aircraft and automobile industries. Educational Institutions and Research establishments recruit electrical engineers as faculty and scientists. Teaching career is also rewarding. They can also enter into self employment by starting own ventures.
