Details and prospects of an Integrated MSc in Bioanalytical Sciences program

I want to pursue a career in Bioinformatics. How good is an Integrated MSc in Bioanalytical Sciences program for the career that I want to pursue? Please provide details on this course offered by University of Mumbai along with course and fee structure.

Bioanalytical science is the field of study where pharma and pharma-allied industries are integrated with traditional medicine. The Integrated MSc in Bioanalytical Sciences program that you want to opt for is an excellent choice for students looking forward to making a career in bioanalysis, bioinformatics and nutraceuticals. This program is offered by Ramnarain Ruia College, Mumbai (affiliated to the University of Mumbai) and you can apply for the course right after the XII or equivalent results are declared. The course fee totals to around Rs 90,000.

This is a 5 years program which comprises integrated B.Sc. and M.Sc. You will be eligible for the course if you have completed XII or equivalent from recognized board in India with minimum 50%. The course pattern is semester based with 2 semesters in a year. The grading system is divided into internal and external assessment preparing the students to develop good understanding of the subject from theoretical and practical aspects.

The course is a good choice if you are looking forward to pursuing a career in Bioinformatics as this course will help you in developing analytical abilities, data interpretation skills and logical reasoning and other skills essential for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry. During the first three years, students are trained in biological sciences (botany, zoology, microbiology and molecular biology), chemical sciences (biochemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and organic chemistry), computational sciences (mathematics, biostatistics and computer sciences), etc. The fourth year of the course is a bridge year, which focuses on teaching the applied aspects of pure sciences with a focus on industry requirements. The last year of the course allows students to specialize in bioanalysis, nutraceuticals or bioinformatics. Good luck!

  • I have pursued the 5 year Integrated course in Bioanalytical Sciences.
From what I have experienced, Bioinformatics specialisation was not offered and is probably going to be removed as a specialisation option. This is because the syllabus offered by Mumbai univ for Bioinformatics is not industry friendly, both nationally and globally.
