Did you think of changing your present job earlier? If yes, what do you think made you stay back?

It is possible that you might have thought about leaving your present job earlier but later decided to continue. Here, you also need to think about what made you think about changing your job in the first place. Now you can talk about the pros and cons of changing the job that went through your mind. You can discuss about the positive aspects of the job, any advancement opportunities you saw or any type of flexibility which kept you attached to your last employment.

  • This is an indirect way of asking why you are leaving your present job. While you will have to first explain what made you stay in your present employment, at the end you must add why according to you now is the time for a switch. You can answer that you had thought of changing the present job because of a number of difficulties you might be facing but at the same time, there were positive aspects of working there too which made you stay all these years. Mention a few positive aspects like gaining experience through expert professionals who you felt guided you all the way to make you what you are now. Your reason can be that you were a fresher back then and you felt that you had a long way to go before you take a major step towards your dream job and meanwhile you can put your knowledge to test and learn what is still lacking.

You might want to tell the interviewer that your sense of responsibility and commitment towards the job did not let you quit so soon and you wanted to stay there for a couple of years before you break the news of switching.

Alternatively, you can keep it simple by saying that you hadn't thought of switching job before but now that you are looking for better growth prospects which you expected from your present employer but did not get, you want to switch.
