Eligibility criteria and entrance exams to get into Income tax department.
I want to join Income tax department, is there any exam that I should give. If yes, then what is the eligibility criterion for the same?
If you wish to join the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), then you should apply for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by UPSC every year. The minimum qualification required for applying for CSE is graduation from a recognised University. There is an age limit i.e. you should have attained the age of 21 years but should not be more than 30 years. Those meeting this age limit criteria are eligible to apply for the above examination (relaxations as per government norms mentioned in the official website on www.upsc.gov.in). There are four attempts for candidates who are eligible for this examination (no restriction on the number of attempts for SC/ST candidates, seven attempts for OBC candidates). There is a preliminary examination (prelims) that is conducted and through which candidates are shortlisted for the main exam (written examination).
Candidates qualifying for the main (written) exam are called for the personal interview. Based on the marks secured in the main (written) and interview, a merit list is made, which determines the choice of service (keeping in mind the options exercised by the candidate in the application). The same examination can lead to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service, Indian P and T accounts and Finance Service, Group ‘A’, Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Group ‘A’, Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) Group ‘A’, etc. The staff selection commission holds a combined graduate level examination which would lead to recruitment as inspector of income tax. The procedure for selection is a very rigorous in CSE as compared to SSC which is less rigorous.
