Government initiatives to tackle the problems of water scarcity

Along with the society, the government also has a role to play in providing solutions to the issue of water scarcity. The government has taken several initiatives to deal with the water scarcity problem.

The recent one “Humara Jal, Humara Jeevan” is creating a great awareness among the masses. The initiative was undertaken to address the issue and to provide accurate solutions.

The Government of India has adopted various initiatives to deal with the problem of water scarcity. Few of them are:

- The National Water Policy

- Bharat Nirman

- Humara Jal, Humara Jeevan

- National Water Mission

- National Mission for clean Ganga

All these initiatives had a common objective – to save the clean and pure water and to minimize the loss of water. Let us take a look into the details of these initiatives.

- The National Water Policy - It was adopted by the Government in September,1987.It was reviewed and updated twice, one in 2002 and other in 2012. It was formed to govern and manage the water resources in India.

- Bharat Nirman – It was a business plan for rural infrastructure which is adopted by the Government of India in 2005. The main aim of the initiative was to provide safe drinking water to all the under developed areas.

- Humara Jal, Humara Jeevan - The initiative “Hamara Jal, Hamara Jeevan” is adopted by the Union Ministry for Water Resources during India Water Week- 2015 (January 13 to 17, 2015) The main aim of the initiative is to create an awareness about water conservation among the people. The initiative is being carried out in 4-5 districts of each state.

- National Water Mission – The initiative was approved by the Union Cabinet on April 6 , 2011. The objective of the initiative is conservation of water and minimizing the wastage of water.

- National Mission for clean Ganga – The Government of India has identified Ganga as the national river and has created the National Ganga River Basin Authority in 2009. The National Mission for Clean Ganga is an implementing wing of NGRBA.

- The 6th World Water Forum was conducted in Marsiella.

- World Water Day is celebrated on 22 March.
