What are the various jobs available for students who pursue Microbiology?


You can study microbiology at three levels i.e. B.Sc, M.Sc and PhD. For students who have done B.Sc in microbiology can work at science laboratories and pathology labs. After completing B.Sc you can do M.Sc in Microbiology. After completing this course, you will be entitled to work in industries like pharmaceutical, dairy, breweries, distilleries, enzyme, etc. While working in such industries you can also do your PhD program. Once you have gained some years of experience it will be easy for you to start your own pathology laboratory. After completing the PhD program you can look forward to teaching at universities and PG colleges. You can also take up a post doctoral research with good fellowship which are generally offered by funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DST, DBT, etc.

What should I keep in mind while pursuing this degree?


In order to have a great career in microbiology your basic and applied aspects of microbiology should be very strong which also includes special skills in laboratory techniques. For example, if you are in the fermentation industry then you should be good in industrial microbiology or fermentation technology. For students who are studying pathology training in various lab investigations is a must. In order to upgrade your skills you can do a certificate, diploma and short-term courses in different areas of microbiology offered by various universities and R&D centers.
