Skills and the minimum educational qualification for Medical Transcription

I am planning to become a medical transcriptionist and want to know the various skills and the minimum educational qualification required for this particular profile.


Skills required for a medical transcriptionist are mentioned below-:

• Seasoned knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, signs and symptoms, medications, and laboratory values.
• In-depth or broad knowledge of a specialty (or specialties) as appropriate.
• Knowledge of medical transcription guidelines and practices.
• Excellent skills in English usage, grammar, punctuation, and style.
• Ability to operate dictation and transcription equipment, and other equipment as specified, and to troubleshoot as necessary.
• Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision.
• Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
• Certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) status preferred or 1-2 years’ experience

The minimum educational qualification required for this particular profile is as follows:-

• Must be a highly skilled transcriptionist or editor maintaining consistent transcription quality of 99% or higher with 2-3 years’ experience
• Demonstrate ability to work in all specialties.
• In-depth knowledge of The AAMT Book of Style.
• CMT preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, signs and symptoms, medications, and laboratory values.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including grammar, punctuation, and style, in order to provide consistent quality feedback.
• Understanding of security and compliance regulations in regard to HIPAA.
• Ability to understand diverse accents, dialects, and varying dictation styles.
• Proficient in referencing, researching, reporting, tracking, and monitoring.
• Ability to multi-task with multiple priorities and time frames.
• Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision.
