What is a GeoTIFF and what is it used for?

GEOTiff stands for Geographic Tagged Image File Format. GeoTIFF in simple words is a standard image file format for Geographical Information Systems applications. It is also a public domain metadata standard which allows geo reference information to be embedded within a TIFF (tagged Image File Format) file. The additional information’s that are given by GEOTiff are map projection, co-ordinate systems, datum’s and everything necessary information to establish the exact spatial reference for the file. It is used for: image processing.
