Key Points

Why does India's financial year start in April?

  • India's financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
  • It was adopted in 1867, during British rule, to match the practice in England.
  • FY 2026-27 means 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
  • The Union Budget, company results and salary-related tax planning follow this cycle.

Why Does India's Financial Year Start in April, Not January?

Your calendar year starts on 1 January. But your company's accounts, the Union Budget and the RBI's reports all talk about years like "2026-27".

Why?

Because India's financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March, not January to December.

Where Did This Come From?

India didn't design this system from scratch. According to the Indian Economic Service's Arthapedia, the April to March financial year was adopted in 1867, during British rule, to match the practice followed in England. India continued with it after Independence.

What Does "2026-27" Mean?

When you see FY 2026-27, it means the financial year from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. That is why the RBI's policy documents this year are titled "2026-27".

Why Should You Care?

Because this year shapes a lot of things in your working life:

The Union Budget is prepared for the financial year.

Companies report their annual results by financial year.

Your salary, tax planning and investment proofs at work usually follow this April to March cycle.

The idea of shifting to January to December has been discussed over the years, but the April to March financial year continues today.
