5 Things You Should Never Share with an AI Chatbot
You ask AI to fix your resume. To write a leave email. To explain an error in your code.It feels like a private conversation. It isn't always.
Depending on the app and your settings, what you type may be saved on the company's servers, and some services use conversations to improve their systems. So here is a simple rule:
Don't type anything you wouldn't be comfortable with someone else reading.
In life, there are things you keep private even from relatives. Apply the same thinking to a chatbot. Here are 5 things to keep out of any AI chat.
1. Your ID Numbers
Aadhaar, PAN, passport number, date of birth together with your full name and address. Why keep them out? These details prove who you are, and once you've typed them into a chat, you can't control where they end up. If they ever reach the wrong person, they can be misused for fraud in your name, and you can't change your Aadhaar or PAN number the way you change a password.
When you ask AI to help fill a form or check a document, remove these details first. AI needs the format to help you, not your actual numbers.
2. Passwords, OTPs and Bank Details
No genuine AI task needs your password, OTP, card number, CVV or UPI PIN. None.If any "AI assistant" or chatbot asks you for these, it's a scam, not a feature.
3. Your Company's Confidential Information
This is where many freshers make a mistake in their first job.Client data, internal documents, source code, salary sheets and project details belong to your company, not to you. Many companies have clear rules about which AI tools employees can use and what can be shared.
Before you paste office work into any AI tool, check your company's policy. Breaking it can cost you your job.
4. Other People's Personal Details
Your friend's phone number. A colleague's health issue. Screenshots of a family WhatsApp group.Even if you're only asking for advice, that information isn't yours to share.
5. Private Documents and Photos
Offer letters showing your salary, marksheets, medical reports, personal photos. Why keep them out? One document can carry your name, address, photo, salary and health details all in one place. And once you upload it, you can't always be sure how long it's stored or who may see it.
If you need help with a document, crop or blur the personal parts first.
How to Still Get Help Without Sharing
You don't have to stop using AI. Just change how you ask.Don't say: "My name is Rahul Sharma, my PAN is ..., fill this form for me."
Say: "Explain how to fill this form. I'll enter my details myself."
Don't say: "Here is our client's sales data, make a report."
Say: "Here is sample data with dummy numbers. Show me how to build this report."
Tip: Use placeholders like [Name], [Company] and [Amount]. You get the same help, and your details stay with you.
AI is a great helper. But it doesn't need your secrets to help you.
