Positive displacement pumps are categorized into two types as follows,

    1. Reciprocating pumps

    2. Rotary displacement pumps

    - The fluid in reciprocating pump is moved by using one or more oscillating pistons. The valves in reciprocating pump restrict fluid motion in desired direction. Plunger type pump and diaphragm type pump are the examples of reciprocating pump.

    - The fluid in rotary displacement pump is moved by using a rotary mechanism which creates a vacuum. Advantage of these pumps is that they are very efficient and naturally remove air from the line. The examples of rotary displacement pumps are gear pump, screw pump, rotary piston pump and vane pump.
