    - Different methods are used to measure roughness of a surface. Direct measuring instruments of roughness are profilometers, profilographs, Tomilson surface tester, Taylor-Hobson-Talysurf roughness tester, etc

    - Profilometer is used for quantitative evaluation of surface roughness. The quantity measured may be maximum or C.L.A or RMS value value of roughness is obtained.

    - C.L.A. or RMS value of roughness is directly measured by using a tracer unit on the surface. The tracer unit uses pointed diamond stylus to test the surface and has radius of 0.002 mm to 0.01 mm.

    - Profilometers are calibrated with standard electroformed surface which is called as surface profile. These instruments are suitable to measure surface finish of deep bores.
