Paramagnetic materials can be magnetized and posses relative permeability more than unity. They consist of unpaired electrons. Platinum, aluminium, palladium etc. are paramagnetic materials. They are considered non-magnetic because they exhibit magnetism only if an electrical field is present.

Iron, cobalt and nickel are ferromagnetic materials. These materials have magnetic properties even if magnetic field is removed. They depend on field strength and have relative permeability greater than unity. These materials have permanent magnetic dipoles and hence have long and permanent magnetization.
