Saudi blogger Raif Badawai has been selected for a free speech prize, the PEN Pinter Prize along with British poet James Fenton. Badawi served 10 years in prison after being convicted of insulting Islam and he was also flogged publicly. Groups such as Amnesty International have campaigned for his release. The award was accepted on the blogger’s behalf by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. PEN Pinter Prize was established in the year 2009 in memory of Noble prize winner and playwright Harold Pinter and run by writer’s group PEN. Fenton is a former professor of poetry at Oxford University as well as a war correspondent.
