a. a statement that energy balance occurs when a system undergoes the change of state or the process
b. a statement about whether the change of state or the process is at all feasible or not
c. both a. and b.
d. none of the above

ANSWER: a statement that energy balance occurs when a system undergoes the change of state or the process

The first law of thermodynamics states that the energy balance occurs when a system undergoes the change of state or the process. It states that if energy is supplied to a system in a form of heat, which can be completely converted into work energy. But practically it is not possible, because internal energy of the system also increases in the process. Thus, first law of thermodynamics does not provide information on whether the change of state or the process is feasible or not.
