    - The relative motion between contact surfaces of shaft and thrust bearing is restricted by friction between them.

    - Depending on surface materials, lubrication, speed and pressure between surfaces the coefficient of friction is varied.

    - If uncertainty of load distribution is observed between surfaces in contact, two assumptions are considered as below:

    1) Uniform pressure theory

    2) Uniform wear theory

    - According to uniform pressure theory, the intensity of pressure distributed over the contact area is constant. Load is well distributed over the entire surface in new bearings and the fit between shaft and bearings is perfect.

    - If old bearings are used, wear at different radii is different and redistribution of pressure intensity is observed.
