Generally, failure is divided into different modes such as early failure, catastrophic failure and wear-out failure, on the basis of its nature. The curve which depicts the modes of behaviour is known as 'Bath-tub Curve'. It is said to be a bath-tub curve because the shape of curve resembles to the shape of bath-tub.

It is usually plotted for two operating stresses. However, maximum level of operating stress yield higher level of failure rate.

In maintainability, the downtime and the failure rate are related to each other. Therefore,bath-tub curve plays a vital role in deciding the maintenance of equipment i.e. preventive, breakdown or capital maintenance. This is so because the existence of different failure modes in a bath-tub curve specifies the desired level of maintenance.

Besides these, it is also applicable in determining the lifts in distillation column and the capital maintenance especially in defence equipments.
