Failure can be defined as a partial or total loss or variation in the device properties in such a manner that its functioning is partially or completely stopped.

Depending upon the nature of failure, it is classified into different modes such as initial failures, early failures, random failures, catastrophic failures and wear out failures.

As the name indicates, initial failures occur during the initiation phase while early failures occur after a short period of installation.

The failures which tend to occur an arbitrary instants are known as 'Random failures'. Wear-out failures usually occur after the long term usability of equipment.

Catastrophic failures occur due to major causes of failure , which results in stopping of functioning level for a long duration of time.

Since the components stops the functioning for longer duration, this kind of failure is supposed to be destructive in nature.
