Length is measured between two surfaces or between two parallel planes. International standard meter and imperial standard yard are widely used standards internationally.

Length standards are classified as line standards and end standards. Length measured between two lines is called line standard and length measured between two parallel flat surfaces is called as end standard.

Imperial standard yard is made of solid square bronze bar which consists of 82% copper, 5% zinc and 13% tin. It is 38 inches long and has 1 in2 cross section. International standard meter is made of pure platinum iridium alloy. The distance between two central transverse lines of plug at 62° F is called as yard.
