There are three types of reaction turbine on the basis of flow of water through the runner. They are radial flow turbine, axial flow turbine and mixed flow turbine.

Among these three types of turbines, the water flows in radial direction at the outer periphery of runner and leaves at the centre in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation of runner. The modern Francis turbine is the example of mixed flow turbine.

The turbine in which water enters and leaves the runner along the direction parallel to the axis of the shaft is called as axial flow turbine. Whereas in a radial flow turbine, the water flows along the radial direction of the runner.
