What are the purposes of the planning phase?

The planning phase comes after vision and scope of the project has been finalized. Its main purpose is to plan a set of activities to achieve the project goals. It defines the whole conceptual solution in detail including the project schedule and plan.

The planning phase includes a set of major deliverables such as functional specification, preparing architecture and design documents, cost estimates and planning. The work breakdown structure is also prepared in this phase enlisting the major tasks and assigning them to various owners along with their times and cost estimates. This is a very detailed document which also includes details about deployment activities and deployment plan.

The master project plan integrates all these various documents in itself along with various milestones which must be met as per schedule.

Main goals of this phase are:

- Developing the solution design and architecture
- Validating the technology
- Creating the functional specification
