IBM is marching towards a new focus through its latest acquisitions and partnerships. The latest in the line of collaborations with IBM is none other than social network major Twitter. This corporate alliance is between the analytics software and large consulting staff of IBM with the massive volumes of information generated by Twitter about the actions and opinions of users. IBM will now be able to access the complete stream of tweets following their posting as well as the tweets which were generated ever since the inception of Twitter. Data sharing of these sheer tons of volumes of information will enable IBM consultants to solve client’s problems.

IBM or Big Blue as it is also called will now join hands with Twitter for the development of fresh applications and services based on this information. The firms have also indicated that they will enable third party developers for integrating Twitter data into new cloud services build by them using IBM tools. The two firms will also develop products and offerings for certain industries and sectors such as banking, retail, consumer products and transportation.

This is another very major pact developed between IBM and another reputed company. Earlier in July, an agreement had been announced for the creation of business apps and sale of iPhone and iPads for IBM’s clients. This agreement was with Apple. New drivers for growth are the focus of this software company. Virginia Rometty, the current CEO of the company is focusing on big data as the chief strategy for growth, according to Wall Street Journal.

“Business decision- making will never be the same,” Rometty said in a video shown at an event in Las Vegas where the partnership was announced, as per a report from Wall Street Journal.

“Businesses have only scratched the surface of what is possible” with Twitter data, Mr. Costolo said in an accompanying video. The social media giant has licensed data to other companies, but is now looking for expansion through other revenue sources than just marketing. Gnip is partnering Twitter for the next big leap. “We have very important relationships with major brands,” Mr. Moody, VP data strategy at Twitter said. “Many of those companies have asked us to help them be better and smarter.” Customer support and service are some of the ways Twitter is used by many companies, organisations and establishments. Twitter is also amazing for garnering social support and promoting welfare activities and rehab following major catastrophes. Twitter user generate 1 billion tweets every 2 days. To quote Moody, “Twitter represents the views of the planet.”
