  • Introduction

Ocean engineering is the study of sea and exploring the disciplines which are associated with it. It consists of other fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, geology, marine geology, geophysics and oceanography. It includes the design and development of innovative instruments and tools to deal with the sea exploration. Ocean engineers develop the oceanographic instruments to be used in various activities to study the coasts and oceans in better and easy way. The examples which exist are ocean seismometers (instruments that measure seafloor movement in a manner similar to the way seismographs measure earthquake activity on land), sediment traps, underwater video instrument, acoustic measuring device, underwater vehicles and other developments which has taken place to revolutionize the field.

Performance and growth of industry in India

Ocean industry is growing and still on the verge of growing more in the upcoming years. Study has showed the growth in the international trade. Advancement in engineering practices is being applied here as the techniques are getting improved which has increased the growth in this field. In India this technology is still new and it will increase not rapidly but slowly day by day. But this field has high potential to grow with the development of new technologies. The employment in this field has increased the standard of living as well. This field is becoming more popular between the engineers as it combines many other fields of engineering.

    Options and Opportunities

Opportunities in this field are very high as engineers can go in government as well as in private agencies in India as well as abroad. Engineers can also go in educational as well as corporate fields to develop themselves in this career. The industries where engineers can apply include offshore oil recovery industry, marine metals and corrosion industry, environmental protection industry, global climate industry etc. The risk in this career is high but it is an interesting career to opt for.
