Degree or skill - what is more important?

Degree or skill – what is more important?

Introduction

Degree and skill are two sides of the same coin. To succeed in the race of life, a person need to have a degree along with the skill. A degree without the skill would be as empty as the skill without the degree. Both need to go hand-in-hand in order to be the survival of the fittest. Degree is nothing but the certified documentation of the skill within the individual. Every person having the skill may not manage to attain the degree. Similarly, every degree holder is not necessarily skilled. The requirement of the degree or skill depends upon the organization, the nature of post etc. On a general outlook, which criteria carries more weightage – the degree or the skill?

Degree

- Degree is an authenticate certificate that the person applying for the post is having the knowledge of the work requirement and has the ability to manage the functioning and justify the post.

- Degree makes a person more confident in his approach and outlook. These things are an essential part of the personality development.

- Degree can make a person more polite, humble and wiser. This could be in order to take charge of the job or to climb the success ladder. But these things are difficult to manage without a degree in hand.

- A degree earns respect and social reputation. A person is assessed through his qualifications which is reflected by his degree.

- Degree earns money and status for its master. The more specialised the degree, the higher the post and status and higher is the salary package.

Skill

- Every degree holder is not necessarily skilled. It is the skill that helps to achieve the target and not the degree.

- Skill is an abstract term which cannot be evaluated on the bits of paper. It is a broad spectrum which is groomed within the individual and nurtured through the repeated practical implications in life.

- It is not the degree but the skill that achieves success. A degree can just earn the job, but it cannot help to grow further without the skill.

- It is skill which attracts the employers, clients and management which lifts or drops the person. Without the skill, the person would not be able to catch hold the interest of their superiors and attain success.

- The great people from the history were all skilled people, but they didn’t had the certifications for their knowledge.

ConclusionB

Degree is the theoretical evaluation of an abstract concept which is virtually not possible. It is the skill that helps the person to grow up both materially / financially and immaterially with respect to the status, importance, social respect and recognition etc. Degree definitely has its own importance, as a person need to have some skill in order to achieve the degree. A complete dumb individual cannot qualify to attain the degree. Hence , we can summarize by saying that the degree is the first step in the ladder of skills which leads to the success in life.

  • According to my opinion Skill is more important than a degree because when we enter in an organization they never give u job only on degree. They will always observed communication skill, way of working ,managing thinks and all such a think which is required for Making good employees. Degree only can give u platform to prove urself but skill would help to hold on given position. Let's take an example of any successful peaple from the whole world one of best example as my point of view bill gates .If he does depends on degree he could not have reach nearer to his goal

  • Skill is far more important than a degree...let me explain why from my real life example.I head the marketing team if an university without a formal mba degree whereas we hit faculties in marketing management from reputed institutes getting paid far below them I am. People with degrees are happy being a faculty rather then testing their strength in the real field.I m regarded as a profit centre and the others with degree as cost centres. I believe the most important skill that one need today are communication, business acumen and creativity. Its enough to challenge any degree and grow up the ladder.

  • For me both degree have an equal importance. As if the are two opposite sides of a same coin. And also they go hand in hand with each other. If one have skill but no degree he will not be accepted by the company as degree is the certificate of our skills and knowledge and experience and. Simultaneously if one has degree but no skill he will not be selected as there are nowadays screening test in interviews

  • Degree and skill both are having its importance. And it is parallel because if one dont have knowledge and having a degree, then there is no use of that and at the same time if one is having a knowledge but no degree then at that time knowledge didnt have its value.
In any field we go there is competition so to get proper from all sides is very important. So School and college going boys and girls they must think about both.

  • I would say in this regard both are important . beacuse if person without degree can be take job through Skill basis but can not prove himself till period get , he exprienced . But if person having degree plus Skill , in short duration of Span , he can take high position in organisation , if person having lack of one thing, take more time to achieve high position.

  • obviously the essence of success comes from the skill which is the very first step of ladder to attain any degree. we know that a degree can otherwise be attained easily by managing unlawful tricks or unfair practices but the case in not the same with SKILL. Hence now a days most of the private sector companies simply count the skill for evaluation and appraisal of one's performance and promote the accordingly . whereas in the govt./public sector it's the degree only to attain a job but not the success all the time. The ratio of unemployed degree holders universally is much higher than that of skilled persons. so skill is always pure while degree can be artificial. the world is full of examples where skilled personalities lord over the system.
in short skill speaks louder than degree.

  • I agree with all of my freinds.i think they are equall with each other because we put our effort into both of them.but in other word ,the experience is more important and we gain more experiences with skill not with degree.i personaly experienced that.one of my friends has no degree in teaching English but has skill and experienced being teacher.but i myself has its degree and cannot teach because i,ve never experienced that and have no skill just degree.in this case having skill is better than degree.but if we mix both of them we can be more successful, because of that i said first they are equal and compelet each other,i said this storyjust to show the importance of experience and skill.

  • A degree is an important investment of time and efforts. It gives you the power of knowledge. An engineer cannot build dams and bridges if he does not have a degree. Similarly a doctor can not cure deadly diseases without a degree in medicine.

Having said that, I would also say that a degree is only as important as the intent and calibre of the person using it. Just owning a degree does not ensure success in life. Abraham Lincoln did not have any fancy degree yet he manged to inspire a nation in their freedom struggle. Mother Teresa was no big doctor but she could still heal the wounds of humanity.

Degree will only polish what lies beneath. It can't make the difference alone. If someone has the skill, he can still manage to succeed without a degree but the reverse is not true. A degree from the best college cant not make someone a good lawyer or doctor if his heart beats for painting or photography. At the end , its only the skill that counts.

  • Actualy according to me skills are key supplements of degree. If you have degree with appropriate skills no one can stop you to achieve success. And also importance is as per your goles, if you want higher position in any organization you must have degree to prove your skills and if you want to become an entrepreneur than no one is going to ask you about your degree you just need to have good skills to grow your business.

  • here i would also like to share my point of view. i agree with all my friends skill is as important as degree and viceversa. without skill nobody can survive, that too being in this 21st century in the competative world. it is the skill which is required to handle all tidious situation. but when it comes to job it is the degree which is the foremost criteria.if u have the degree u r aallowed to take part in interview and after that it is based on our skills how we get through the interview. so i hereby conclude that skilled person can show is skill if he has degree has the token.

  • according to me degree and skill both are important now-a-days..
since degree is the alibi of your skill.degree is the echelon of your ability and on the other hand skill is necessity of survival in this competitive world.although skill is the only thing which tryst the you from your endeavor.
  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -Tanu (09/25/14)
  • friends what I have found in my "degree" experience is that. Degree and skill both plays equal role to your career. Degree with good marks and skill are the things one requires to be successful. But skill n degree from any distance learning program, which some of my friends has quoted, will also be a good option for a person who has no choice.
As degrees which are acquired by some renouned institute for a skillful person would not be a children's play, As if we look into the actual scenario degree needs focus at the time of exams and fully preparedness according to that exam, but skill demands from you to focus on extra co curricular activity which require commitment and many a time you may ended up with ruining your marks because you remain busy in ur co-curricular which means ruining ur degree due to your skill. if you are unable to control ur urge to go for ur passion and don't focus on exams which is a totally different task, then you are gone.
So this discussion will go on and on, acquiring knowledge with degree is also challanging.

  • Surely skill is important one.. without skill we can't do any thing or get degree.
A person who have much skills doesn't need to have any degree to achieve

  • degree and skills both are importent but skills have heavy waitage than degree, but degree is also importent. Degree provides position and skills provide growth.a degree with good skills makes a man/woman unbeatable.

  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -Goldi tiwari (09/20/14)
  • According to me in current scenario degree and skill both are important. One cannot succeed without taking other in this competitive world. If one does not have the degree he/she cannot enter in any organisation and the same time skills also helps the person to attain a position in organisation like his communication and technical skills. Both helps to grow financially ,personally. But skill contributes major role in ones achievement and growth in life.

  • i think skill is more important than degree...
  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -ravi (09/20/14)
  • i ihink skill is more important than degree because with the help of degree a person can easily get a chance to sit in an interview but it is his skill that helps him to grab the job.
a persons degree is futile if he doesn't posses the skills required.
a person having a degree it does not mean that he can solve problems of life it is skills that helps him to solve the problems for me degree is just a paper nothing more than that but skill is that thing which cannot be evaluated on paper.

  • friends first of all I would like to thanks teena bhatia to start the discussion on such a positive note. friends by my opinion skills are more important as compared to degrees. I agree with my previous speakers degree also plays vital role In the journey of success but skills plays a major role coz degrees can be easily bought from any institution, college, there N no's of universities which provides distance learning education for ex. KSOU anyone of us can be the student this university and can easily get the degree of 80% marks in any specialisation. but that is of no use coz in today's scenario skilled person is always given first priority experienced person always get salute in every field whether it's private firm, govt
firm only n only experienced one gets priority first as compared to degree holder.
friends these kind of degrees are of no use infact we can say it results in corruption, crime, unemployment, Illiteracy, n many other aspects.
let's take an example of schools n colleges I have seen N no. of teachers holding well known degrees like MA, M.COM, M PHIL but what do we usually found an English teacher holding MA in English unable to speak even a single word in English and appointed as a teacher he is the one who spoils the life of many students this results in when a child grows up he/she moves to well reputed firm he/she has good degree but unable to crack an interview for that particular post and in most of the cases the one who has good political approach and a degree he/she gets a job easily and always a talented one skilled person has to suffer which results in unemployment at end they prefer suicide as a one n only way
so this is my opinion skills are more important and skilled person should always given first priority
    .

  • i would like to say that both are really important.you can not get entry in companies without a degree n at the same time if u dnt have skills in urself you will be fired from your company ..so degree is important but only with skills..
  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -kaliyugathu ayyan (09/15/14)
  • My point of view about this GD is both skills and degree are important in life. because degree is a identity for u....Without a degree we cant survive in the fastest world...But a degree cant make us to become a perfect man in the world...Most of the top companies expected their employees are good in skills like communication skills, technical skill, etc,.But wthout a degree we cant enter the company....Without a skillswe cat survive in the company....So both skills and degree are important....
  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -shruti shrabya (09/13/14)
  • A person with no skill but with many degrees is of no usw. Any person must be skilled enough in particular fields to go further.
Management people needs skillful employees not people with degrees.
According to me skill is more important.
  • RE: Degree or skill – what is more important? -nishi gupta (09/13/14)
  • degree and skill both are two faces of same coin.. as it is very well known..but it is very much obvious that skill is more important than degree...in this fast competitive world no one can trust on u that u are capable of that particular work or not.. so to prove yourself that you re capable. u should have a particular area degree..
but more obvious that if u have a degree nt having any skill so u can't survive in that field,, as skill is first requirement then degree
as world is changing day by day it wants professionalism, it wants a person that can be best for them ..they will only give to chance them..so for this type of requirements every person should have skills with degree..

there wold be chances to get success wuthout degree.. but without skills u can't do anything in any field..

if i take an example in my field that is engineering..in this field to get entry u must have a degree to prove urself.. but after getting degree if u dn't hae any skills then u will be out from this field immediately..
    \
so skill is more important tha degree.. but both has its own importance... mainlt it can be said that to get success ur first step would be degree and then command on ur skills.. then nobody can stop u to success.. to be successfulll
