Is it justified to ban smoking in public

Smoking is harmful to health and some governments have banned smoking in public. Some business houses also do not allow smoking in their premises.
Do you think it is justified on their part to ban smoking?

Yes, I completely agree that it is justified to ban smoking and I feel really appreciative of the Governments and business houses that have banned the same .In fact, I feel that not only should public smoking be banned, but people found practising the same should be heavily penalised.

To put a ban on public smoking becomes absolutely necessary as it not only hampers the health of the smokers but that of the innocent non-smokers as well. The non-smokers present in that area forcefully inhale the fumes and their health is put at risk for no fault of theirs. These non smokers also include young innocent children. Moreover, smoking causes air pollution and litters the environment as well.

By putting a ban on smoking, health hazards in the society will be reduced. Also, there will be reduction in air pollution and environment will become cleaner. Also, number of asthma patients has been increasing over the last few years. Research states that most of the asthmatics are non-smokers. They get this disease due to the harmful fumes which accumulate in the environment due to smoking by others. Hence, we can see that number of people that are affected due to smoking are much more than the number of smokers themselves.

Also, it cannot be ignored that lots of forest fires have been caused because a smoker has thrown a cigarette lit up in the forest. Thousands of trees and animals have died. Likewise,
many buildings have also caught fire due to these kinds of ignorance on the parts of the smokers.

Another dangerous implication of smoking is that teenagers and youth have started perceiving smoking as “fashion” symbol and this is very dangerous since, it makes them resolve to smoking at a very young age. This is a societal issue and should be addressed collectively.

Awareness camps, excessive advertising regarding negative effects of smoking accompanied by strict rules and their enforcement can help to address the issue of public smoking.

  • I agree with the statement that smoking should be banned in public areas, as we all know that smoking is injurious to health and also kills. The carcinogens found in cigarettes and tobacco is known to be injurious to health and causes no good to human health. A person who smokes is known as an active smoker but the people who are around him at the time of smoking are called passive smokers. These passive smokers unintentionally inhale a lot of tobacco which in turn leads to degradation of their health. Mostly all asthma patients are found to be passive smokers and their lungs are affected due to their presence in the smoking environment. Apart from this many a times due to carelessness people leave their lit cigarettes in public places which can cause fire and many other problems. Thus, to make sure that all the above problems are eradicated and people get fewer opportunities to smoke, smoking should be banned in public.
