Should women be allowed longer army tenure?

Indian Army Commission has sent a new proposal to Narendra Modi in which they have requested to offer permanent commission to women officers. As of now, they can only serve as short service commission officers. The proposal is sent to the ministry of defense and is under consideration. As always, it is again about women. So, it is natural to attract more attention than normal. Debates have already started on the sent proposal. What is your view? Do you think women should be allowed for longer army tenure?

Yes

• When women are given at par status in every field then why the permanent commission is blocked? It is about women empowerment in all the fields.

• In many other countries like US, Sri Lanka, Israel, and other women officers are already assigned the combat roles.

• Women can gain the required physical stamina on the training sessions and become well deserving permanent officers.

• Even women are given the fighting roles on the Indian Police Services. Why they cannot be given the same rights in army?

• It is more of psychological concept that women don’t have physical strength and stamina. They are the only one who bears the most pain while giving birth to a child.

No

• In the army it is focusing more on the security of the country rather than arguing on this issue. It is clear that bulk of the junior commission officers is not in a state to accept a woman as their leader. So, forcing a one can lead to problems within the army.

• It is not about the army; even the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force don’t have women officers in combat roles and especially when they have more educated officers.

• It is not about sports, but it is about fighting on the real grounds. Officers don’t have a choice other than displaying their physical skills that is comparatively less in women.

• Women are more emotional and during the battle field there is always a risk of women breaking off by seeing the blood bath.

• Women are not allowed to play cricket with boys; they cannot play kabbadi with boys and so on. It is not that men consider women below them; it is just that women don’t have that physical stamina to catch up with boys.

• Opposite sex can create problems of focus and concentration in the most crucial sector of the country.

Conclusion

It is good to advocate for women empowerment but is not at all fair to ask for gender equality in each and every case. Have you ever wondered why nursing career have more women, and less men? It is simple as women are more proficient for that job. Men lack on emotional and caring scale. There are different areas in which men and women both have their own strength. They are at par with men in the brain jobs. So, it is really not practical to ask for longer army tenure for women.

  • On practical grounds, it is a really tough situation to accommodate longer tenure for women in army. It is good to argue and debate on physical stamina, equality and empowerment; but in practical world, we can hardly find any job demanding hard physical labour combating women. Rightly said, even the sports team for the men and women are separated.

It is not that the woman is emotionally weak. They have more fighting spirit as compared to men. But we cannot expect an opponent army just with women to face our female soldiers, the same as in sports. We can amend the laws of our country, but we cannot expect any changes in the war rules on international basis.

Keeping both the sexes at the same unit may start up attraction, and hence this would a distraction from the most crucial service of security and protection for the country. Many other sensitive issues also arise like physical assaults etc. the male soldier captured during the war by the opponent would not be the same as in case of female soldiers. The physical security comes into play. A trained female soldier can fight a normal man with her strength and skills, but it would be equally tough to face the equally trained male soldier on the war ground.

Hence, it would be better for women to carry on with the short army tenure.
